THE ASK
Choose any collection from a designer or brand active after 1959 and provide a brief abstract summarizing its major themes. Consider historical context, exploring how the designer captures the era's zeitgeist, reflecting elements like the economy, political tensions, societal shifts, or rejections of norms. Identify the designer's fashion philosophy and influences, and analyze the aesthetic features of various garments in the collection, noting cultural influences and significant themes.
THE PROCESS
Upon being assigned this research paper, I knew I wanted to write about a Dior collection. After several hours of researching various collections and watching countless runway shows, I chose the Dior Spring 2007 Couture collection. Designed by then-creative director John Galliano, it was a captivating display of theatricality, opulence, and innovation. The collection, showcased during Paris Fashion Week, was notable for its fusion of various inspirations, such as Madame Butterfly and Japanese history. The silhouettes were diverse, featuring a mix of structured and flowing garments. Some pieces embraced a romantic and voluminous aesthetic, while others featured more streamlined and structured cuts. Luxurious materials such as silk, satin, and lace were prominently featured, contributing to the overall sense of sophistication and glamour. True to Galliano's flair for theatrics, the runway presentation was a spectacle in itself. The models showcased the garments in a prop filled runway, thus creating a memorable fashion experience.
THE RESULT
Throughout writing this paper, I was able to not only showcase my understanding of contemporary fashion terms, but further my knowledge on Couture fashion and the world of Christian Dior. Studying this collection fostered a deeper appreciation for the artistry behind fashion design, thus providing new insights into cultural and historical influences that shape trends. Examining past collections helped me recognize trends that have shaped the fashion industry. It allowed me to identify patterns and draw connections between different eras and contemporary styles. Additionally, it contributed to my personal style development by exposing me to diverse aesthetics and helping me refine my preferences.
